EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Barbara Steckel, Vice President
Your Education Committee has been hard at work – they took time from sewing on their projects at the Retreat in February to work on decisions for future classes.
Coming up next is our program following the April meeting.  At the Retreat we got to see a very cute little iPad Stand.  Here is the supply list:

  • 1 fat quarter
  • Thread to match (a small amount of top stitching)
  • Craft Fiber fill
  • Cutting ruler, mat & cutter
  • Machine and basic sewing supplies

This could make a great gift or use it by your sewing machine!!  Donna Glenz has agreed to teach the class.
Doesn’t seem possible that it has been almost two years since Bonnie Hunter was here.  She will be back with us on May 15 & 16, 2015.   At this point the class is full, but we will start a waiting list if you are interested. As we all know, things come up and sometimes people have to drop out, so even if you are on the waiting list, there is a good chance you will get in.  Friday will be Texas Tumbleweeds from her new book “More Adventures with Leaders and Enders” and Saturday will be Smith Mountain Morning from “Scraps & Shirttails 2.”  Smith Mountain Morning uses different rulers and techniques. We realize this will require two books, but many people already have “Scraps and Shirttails 2” and have already ordered her new book.   If you do not want to do the second quilt, you can continue working on Texas Tumbleweeds on Saturday, but the registration will be for the two-day class.  There is a $70.00 charge for the two-day class. If you haven’t signed up but are interested, please notify Sue Magyar by email at Magyar@arctic.net and mail your check for $70.00 payable to KPQG to Sue at P O Box 1617, Seward, AK 99664.  Your supply list will be emailed to you.  You are not on the waiting list class until your check is received.

During Retreat we started taking registration for Anelie Belden’s two-day class on “Thoroughly Modern Dresden”.  The book will be required but you will be able to choose which of the quilts you would like to make.  The Class is scheduled for August 7 and 8, 2015.  The fee for this class will be $70.00.    There was a great response on the registration, but we do have a few more spots open.
If you are interested, please notify Sue Magyar by email at Magyar@arctic.net and mail your check for $70.00 payable to KPQG to Sue at P O Box 1617, Seward, AK 99664.  Your supply list will be emailed to you.  The Guild will be hosting a Trunk Show on Friday night, August 7. There is no charge for the Trunk Show.   Even if you aren’t taking the class, you can attend the trunk show.  Go to her web site www.anelie.com.

The Guild has a contract in place for Susan Else on May 20-21, 2016.  Susan is a soft sculpture artist and teacher.  This will be a very different type class and hopefully it will draw the attention of some of our very creative members.  The class that the Education Committee chose was “3D Adventures – Beasts in the Jungle” which is described as follows on her web site:
“This hands-on workshop explores techniques for making organic 3D forms in fabric, from vines and flowers to outrageous animals. To allow students to experience the process of making a complete three-dimensional landscape, we pin our individual class samples together to make a collective jungle scene, photograph the result, and then, at the end of the workshop, un-pin the diorama and take our samples home. We explore the use of color, value, and scale to enhance the depth of a piece, as well learning to create gesture, form, and movement in fabric.”

Susan is considering some new classes.  Should she offer them, the Education Committee could change the class.  Check out her website at www.susanelse.com.  A trunk show is also scheduled for Friday evening.
In August 2016, we will have Jacquie Gering.  This will again be two days of classes.  The first day is going to be a Stitch and Flip Improvisation technique and the second day will be Creating Quilting with Your Walking Foot.  Go to www.tallgrassprairiestudios.blogspot.com

Your Committee will continue to work on finding classes to meet the varied interests of our members.  Please share your interests and teachers you may know with the Committee.
