Vice President and Education Committee Report

Since the last newsletter we have had a class by Connie Sue Haidle of Appleblossom Quilts.  We had 20 students enrolled to learn her way of doing applique. She had an interesting technique and everyone did a little practice on their piece.  There were many lectures and demos during the day.  The Guild hosted the trunk show at 1:00 pm and opened it to the public. Her work was amazing and everyone enjoyed the show.  Thanks to Kathleen Barkley for being the “holder” and “folder” during the show, assisted by Connie Sue’s husband, Jerry.  Another thanks goes to all who brought our potluck lunch and to Marsha Vincent who provided the birthday cake to celebrate Cindy Smoyer’s birthday. Hopefully you’ll be able to see some of the pictures on the website.

Coming up next is our October Meeting.  After the meeting we will have a demo of different ways to make several blocks.  No machines, no supply lists, just demos.  We have several lined up, but if you have a really different approach to a block, contact me and maybe we can add you to the list.  Additionally, a number of people have indicated an interest to know more about how to use “Pinterest”.  After the block demo Sue Magyar will show you how to navigate Pinterest – bring your tablet or computer if you would like to learn more about Pinterest.

The week following our meeting, on October 10 & 11, Pam Ventgen will be teaching “Toes in the Sand”.  This is a two-day class and there are still a few openings.  The cost for the class is $40.00.  The book and Hex-n-More template are $29.00. Everyone who has signed up for the class has been contacted by email, so if you think you signed up and didn’t receive an email, you need to let me know as soon as you receive the newsletter.  We have placed the order for the books and templates for those in class that wanted them, but we ordered a couple extra, so if you are interested contact me by phone or email ASAP.

November 1 is “Getting Ready for Christmas”.  This will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna starting at 10:00 am.  We have projects from each area that should be a lot of fun and make good gifts.  We’ll be doing an ornament, a bowl hot pad, Auto Trash Bag, and a Gadget Holder made from Men’s Neckties.  The supply list is included in the newsletter, but we will also have some available at the October meeting.  Hopefully all the samples will make it to the meeting so you can decide which ones you want to make.  Central Peninsula will provide the potluck lunch.

The next educational event will be after the April meeting.  It is too early to give you the details because the holidays will get in the way, besides, most of us quilters wait until the last minute to get ready anyway!

Bonnie Hunter will be back with us on May 15 & 16, 2015.  Friday will be Texas Tumbleweeds from her new book “More Adventures with Leaders and Enders” and Saturday will be Smith Mountain Morning from “Scraps & Shirttails 2”.  Smith Mountain Morning uses different rulers and techniques. We realize this will require two books, but many people already have “Scraps and Shirttails 2” and have already ordered her new book.   If you do not want to do the second quilt, you can continue working on Texas Tumbleweeds on Saturday, but the registration will be for the 2 day class.  Due to the large number of people that have indicated an interest in her class, it was decided at the last KPQG Board meeting that registration for the class will be opened at the October meeting and you will not be placed on the list until we have a paid registration.  If you are not going to be at the meeting, you can send your registration information (name, address, email) and $70.00 class fee with a friend or mail your check payable to Kenai Peninsula Quilting Guild (KPQG) and mail to Barbara Steckel, P O Box 1027, Sterling, AK 99672.  When the class fills up, the balance of the names will be placed on a waiting list.   Last time Bonnie was here we had as many as 10 people on the waiting list, but everyone got into the class.  Circumstances change as the class gets closer and we move people up from the waiting list in the order their registration is received.   The Board also voted to have Bonnie do a trunk show again with the hopes that more people will be able to attend and enjoy her work.

August 2015 -  Anelie Belden will be teaching a 2-day class on “Thoroughly Modern Dresden”.  The book will be required but you will be able to choose which of the quilts you would like to make.   A trunk show has been requested.  Registration for this class will start at the April meeting.  Go to her web site www.anelie.com

May 2016 - Susan Else, Soft Sculpture, www.susanelse.com, has agreed to do a class and we are working on including a trunk show.

August 2016 -  Jacquie Gering, “Modern/Improvised Log Cabins and Machine Quilting”. Please go to her website and look at her many interesting projects.  The Education Committee has recommended that one of her classes be on machine quilting and the other day will be on a different technique. www.tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com

August 2017 - Joan Ford, www.Hummingbird-Highway.com has agreed to join us and share how she does scrappy quilts.  It will have been almost 2 years since a Bonnie Hunter class, so I’m sure most of us will have more scraps and would like more ways to use them.   Also, check out http://scrap-therapy-quilts.blogspot.com.

The Committee is still working with Kate Beebe to provide the 2-day “Faces” class.  Additionally they are still looking for other teachers locally and around the state to provide classes.  Please provide your input on teachers you would like to have the Education Committee consider.

Your Education Committee is Kathleen Barkley, Donna Glenz, Cathy Howlett, Lorna Kramer, Alice Krivitsky, Cheri Worley and Sue Magyar.
